<<< places to visit                           SOUTH ATLANTIC - MARTINIQUE

The landscape of the south Atlantic region of the island is variable to say the least. Passing from zones that are extremely dry to the very south into lush green fields rich with agriculture. A hilly region, constantly battered by wind its’ coastline is dotted with small islands and outcrops with white sandy beaches.
Venturing inland from the coast will lead you up and down splendid valleys, passing plantations of sugar cane and flowering fields, finally climbing into the tropical forest.

le vauclin martinica - martiniqueLe Vauclin

Le Vauclin is a large fishing village facing the Atlantic Ocean. Its is very quiet and maintains a peaceful rhythm. You could stop here for a light meal whilst visiting the nearby beach of Macabou or Pointe Faula. There is also a traditional fish market.

The Bays of Francois and Robert, even though they are not all that popular with the crowds, have always attracted the higher classes of Martinique because of their beauty. Today all the Ilets (that is how the small islands are called) are private and host one or more villas or homes that are lived in, usually, only during the weekends.

Water sports and activities are very popular in the bay: catamaran sailing, fonds blancs excursions, sea kayaks, kite surf and diving along the coral reef.

The region surrounding Le Francois is considered the most fertile of the south. Essentially an agricultural community, the area’s main tourist focus are the Habitation Clément, its small islands and Fonds Blancs.

ilet oscar martinica - martiniqueThe Ilets du François are 8, some privately owned, some deserted and others with simple shelters. The access is possible for the beaches of Ilet Oscar, Ilet Long et Ilet Thierry.

There are many excursions organized both with sailboats and with motor boats. If you wish to “do it yourself” you can obtain more information with the local fishermen at the port of Francois or at the Marina of the Baie du Simon. The more sporty can reach the Ilets in kayak.

Le Robert

ilets du robert martinica - martiniqueThe municipality of Robert is surrounded by hills cultivated with sugar cane and bananas. It overlooks an ample bay that is protected by the coral reef and 10 or so little ilets that form a marine/land eco system that is considered one of the most beautiful of the Caribbean. The scenery is breathtaking, the color of the sea goes from emerald green to turquoise to the most transparent of them all, this is where the name “fond blanc” comes from.

The ilets of Robert’s Bay that are accessible to the public are only 3, lLlet Chancel, Ilet Madame and Ilet Loup Garou

iguana ilet chancel martinica - martiniqueThe Ilet Chancel is the biggest of the little islands of Martinique, it is the only place where endemic iguanas of the Small Antilles still are to be found.  Iguana Delicatissima can be easily spotted. You can also visit the ruins of a “habitation” and just over the cape there is a beautiful beach with crystalline waters, not known by many.

ilets du robert martinica - martiniqueThe Ilet Madame, on the opposite side of the bay is well known for its locals, its beach, the crystalline waters and the “fond blancs”.

There are numerous ways to visit the Ilets du Robert, you can choose from a number of organized excursions, with the local fishermen or do it yourself with a Kayak

Just out of the coral reef is the Ilet Loup Garou (ware wolf in French) is an atoll of pink mother of pearl sand with a few palm trees…..the materialization of the island of your dreams.
